What a time to be glamourous! The opening day of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show concluded in style with a cocktail reception and a grand Gala Dinner sponsored by the Tanzanite Foundation. The chosen theme ‘Tribute to Movie Queens’ salutes film greats, which was perfectly illustrated by a special dinner menu designed by Chef Robert Fontana, the ASEAN Chairman of Disciples Escoffier International Asia. A glittering parade of luxurious jewellery masterpieces from acclaimed exhibitors anchored the event, which also saw The Hon. Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, GBS, JP, President of the Legislative Council of HKSAR, taking part as the evening’s officiating guest.

The necklace “Rhythm” designed by Odate Natsumi from Japan won the title of “Champion of the Champions” in the International Jewellery Design Excellence Award. Celebrities including Samantha Ko, Kelly Cheung and Sammi Cheung looked stunning in the glamorous gowns designed by renowned Hong Kong fashion designer Arthur Lam.

2017 marks the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of Tanzanite. “With a strong presence in Europe, the Middle East and the US, MKS produces a wide variety of jewellery products from basic styles to high-end products. We own several brands including Mokoso for fashion jewellery, Peter Heim for wedding rings and Laudier for high-end necklaces. We have been participating in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show for many years. As we are strong in product development, we are optimistic about our jewellery business this year. At this year’s jewellery show, we have met a lot of buyers from Europe, the Middle East, South Africa and the US. Up till now, we have received onsite orders from 8-10 buyers. It is a good show. We want to have a bigger booth next year.”
Farhan M. Baqri (centre), Sales Manager, MKS Jewelry International Co., Ltd., Thailand (Booth: CEC 3B-D20)

“Founded in 2002, Frank Wu Design is a leading jewellery design company on the Chinese mainland that provides ODM service. We have 30 in-house designers headed by a French design director. We have registered our ttf brand in Paris and opened a physical store there to sell haute joaillerie. We have joined the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show for many years to promote our design capability and strengthen our brand. This year, a Russian buyer likes our designs and craftsmanship and is interested in buying our solitaire diamond rings. Two mainland buyers from Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces have expressed their intention to place orders. This is an important event that we cannot afford to miss because it attracts both the Chinese mainland and overseas buyers.”
Adam Yi, Sales Director, Frank Wu Design, the Chinese mainland (Booth: CEC 3B-D08)

“Established in 1975, Continental Jewellery designs, manufactures and distributes diamond jewellery products, with Europe and North America as our major markets. We hope to develop new markets on the Chinese mainland and in Eastern Europe and South America. We have maintained our exposure in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show for many years because the fair provides a meeting place for us to strengthen our relationships with existing customers and to look for new buyers. Business atmosphere has been better than last year in terms of buyer traffic. Apart from meeting our existing customers, we have established contacts with new buyers from Russia and the UK.”

  Hear What Buyers Say
“Established in 1924, Na Hoku operates 66 jewellery stores in 13 states in the US. Our fine jewellery is characterised by the essence of Hawaiian and island lifestyle. The timing of the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show is good because we can test market response to new products and will place bigger orders for the holiday season if the market response is good. The Hong Kong show is a barometer of the latest jewellery trends. It is an amazing show with a lot of new ideas and new designs on offer. At this year’s show, we are looking for pearl jewellery and gemstone jewellery. Up till now, we have placed orders with two Hong Kong suppliers for US$50,000 worth of pearl jewellery and gemstone jewellery.”
Heidi Gygax, General Merchandising Manager, Na Hoku, Inc., the US

“Vivara is one of the largest jewellery and watch retailers in Brazil which has 200 stores. This is my first time visiting the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, but my colleagues come here every year because it is an important sourcing event. At the show, I am looking for 925 sterling silver jewellery for our Life brand which targets young people aged 20-30. Through the HKTDC’s business matching service, I have identified two to three potential suppliers which provide exactly what I want. After receiving their quotations, I’ll place orders by the end of March and my initial order will be at least 100 pieces. I like the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show very much. It’s a huge show where I can find high-quality suppliers and new designs.”
Isabela Gomes, Product Specialist, Vivara, Brazil

“Established in 1840, W.Kruk is the oldest jewellery retailer in Poland which runs more than 100 stores and sells all kinds of jewellery from fashionable items to luxury items. As our business is growing, we will open several new stores this year. This is my first visit to the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show. I am particularly looking for trendy and delicate jewellery and silver or gold-plated chokers which are well-liked by our customers. I have found two to three new suppliers from the Chinese mainland. If everything is good, we will buy at least 100 pieces as our trial order. I enjoy this visit very much because I can meet with a lot of suppliers and find a lot of inspiration. I plan to come again next year.”
Aleksandra Polak, Designer, W.Kruk S.A., Poland

Having attended this show for many years, I am always delighted to find new and interesting creations by jewellery designers and brands from around the world. I also make it a point to visit the many individual booths at Designer Galleria where trend-setting designs can often be found.

Among the many talented individuals exhibiting at Designer Galleria is Sabina Lee, the creative force behind the Hong Kong designer brand, Green G, who offers a colourful garden of floral creations. Her purple sapphire necklace in the “Monet” collection caught my attention right away. In addition to varying tones of the violet sapphires, the piece also features blue sapphires, rubies, amethysts and diamonds arranged as splashes of rich colour, exquisite! Sabina’s creativity also extends to the marine world with her playful diamond and moonstone “Fish” brooch that features a black diamond eye.

JAPAN PRECIOUS

At the Pearl Pavilion of the Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show, not only can I find Akoya pearl products from Japan, there are also plenty of products created with South Sea pearls and the state-of-the-art technology of Japan.

At the Jewellery Show, I have an impression that buyers from around the world love to crowd at the Japan Pavilion. This has proven that the quality, price and honest business style of Japanese Jewellers are well acknowledged by global buyers and it makes me very happy as Japanese.

In the future, there is no doubt that these two shows in Hong Kong will become more and more important to Japanese exhibitors.

Spectacular and colorful, Hong Kong is the ideal city to host the International Jewellery Show, which welcomes visitors from all over the world. The large number of trade visitors expected this year give hope to the economy of the jewellery industry, especially considering the wide range of jewellery exhibited and the presence of international experts. Goldware is an evergreen and is always appreciated by the Eastern Markets, and it also applies for pearls, from the ordinary ones to the rarest pieces, like the golden South Sea, but the undisputed protagonists of this edition will certainly be precious stones: huge diamonds and coloured stones will be in the limelight. Finally, the organiser has opened the doors to young local designers with the Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition, now in its eighteenth edition. Smart and technological, the Jewellery Show and the city of Hong Kong are just a perfect match!

If the last two New York Fashion Weeks – the latest Hollywood red-carpet spectaculars—are to be believed, statement pieces are back. What better proof than the recent Academy Awards, and Charlize Theron’s traffic-stopping shoulder-duster Garden of Kalahari earrings by Chopard; Jessica Biel’s Tiffany collar fashioned with 60 cts. of diamonds and 350 yellow gold leaves; and Taraji P. Henson’s 100+ carat diamond bib necklace by Nirav Modi? Still, do not discount the importance of wearable, everyday jewellery—pieces that can be layered, added, and subtracted as the mood strikes. That is why I was thrilled to visit Mira Style Jewellery Company Limited (Booth No. CEC 1B-D34), whose styles are perfectly pitched for self-purchasers.

Mira Style’s biggest business are semi-mounts. After all, no matter which way the trend winds blow, people are going to get married. But the brand also boasts an extensive fashion collection in white, yellow and rose gold, with dynamite Goldilocks-size diamond earrings—not too big, not too small—and rings, rings, and more rings. They are beautifully stackable, and absolutely addictive. Do not blame me if you can’t stop at just one.

Buyers Out in Force at Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show

At the opening day of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show, we witnessed a strong flow of buyers from Shenzhen, Beijing and Guangdong Province of the Chinese mainland. They were out in force actively looking to explore business cooperation.

Despite a slowdown in China’s GDP growth in recent years, the country still maintained a solid 6.7% year-on-year growth rate, making it the driving engine for the global economy. In the Chinese mainland’s jewellery market, backed by strong public consumption, gold jewellery and diamond jewellery remain the mainstream products due to strong demand for wedding pieces.

Gemstones, too, have been gaining popularity in recent years while the high-end pearl market continues to gain pace. Consumers are also showing rising interest in gold pearls and white pearls from the South Sea, black pearls from Tahiti and AKOYA pearls from Japan. As a result, diamonds, gemstones and pearls have become hot items vigorously sought after by Chinese mainland buyers at the fair.

Collector's Guide WATCHES, Indonesia

This year I'm so lucky to have been invited to the HKTDC two shows; the first event to attend was the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show at the AsiaWorld-Expo. This year, I must say, the gemstones are especially impressive.

The show features three zones and I visited two of them on my first day - the Hall of Fine Diamonds and Treasures of Ocean, showcasing pearls from around the globe. The next day I would immerse myself in the third zone, Treasures of Nature, showcasing precious and colourful gemstones.

What’s not to like about witnessing so much of nature's beauty from around the globe in one place? Hundreds of exhibitors are gathered here and I had a chance to chat with some of them to get their views. I was pleasantly surprised that most of them have been loyally participating in this event, because their participation had great impact and positive results from the business point of view.

I also compared it to last year's event, and I must say that this event, in terms of professional execution by HKTDC, is unrivalled. I strongly suggest that my readers and jewellery lovers from Indonesia should come and participate in this kind of event to become well known by the global industry.

“In business for 39 years, Marfil Tallada is a jewellery wholesaler and retailer in Spain. We are running two jewellery shops in Valencia. Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show is really a wonderful trade fair. I believe it is the best of its kind in the world where buyers can find everything from diamonds to gemstones and pearls. I am here looking for various pearls and gemstones. So far, I have got in touch with 10 to 15 suppliers from India and Hong Kong. Three orders worth about US$18,000 were already placed. In total, I expect to spend about US$100,000 to source different items this year. I will also visit Hong Kong International Jewellery Show to buy diamond jewellery. Everything is perfect here in Hong Kong.”
Héctor Marfil Tallada, Manager, Marfil Tallada Perlas, Spain

“KamiRus is engaged in jewellery wholesale business in Russia. As part of expansion, we are developing two jewellery brands for men and women. This is my second-year visit to Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show to source semi-precious stones and polished diamonds. I found a Belgian supplier through the business matching service and will purchase some diamonds of 0.30 to five carats for US$60,000 to US$70,000. I spoke at the Buyer Forum to discuss Russia’s jewellery market and really enjoyed the fruitful exchange with buyers and exhibitors there. I am also visiting Hong Kong Jewellery Show to source silver jewellery and stainless steel jewellery. I expect to spend about US$250,000 to US$300,000 in total to buy various diamonds and jewellery pieces.”
Jain Kirnesh Amritial, General Director, KamiRus LLC, Russia

  Hear What Exhibitors Say
“Sparkle Gems is a well-established manufacturer with profound expertise in emerald cutting and production facilities in India. Our company is a Gemfields authorised auction partner and bought US$10 million worth of items in the last auction of Gemfields. We specialise in Zambian emeralds and key markets include Hong Kong, USA, the Chinese mainland, Europe, Brazil and Germany. At Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show this year, we have met a number of buyers from the Chinese mainland, USA and the Middle East. A sting of deals were already concluded. The largest deal involved the sale of tanzanite for over US$2 million under Tanzanite Foundation by a Chinese mainland buyer. The USA buyer spent US$200,000 for emeralds of one to five carats while another mainland buyer also bought some emeralds of three to five carats for US$200,000. We see strong demand for emeralds and the investment market looks promising. The tanzanite market is also strong. The prospect of business growth in Asia and the Chinese market looks really positive. I have achieved many good deals through the exhibition. This show is the best of its kind in the world. We will definitely continue to exhibit here.”
Imran Khan, CEO, Sparkle Gems, Hong Kong (Booth no. 7H-24)

“D.B.S. Diamonds is a leading diamond manufacturer and wholesaler in USA serving the industry for over 15 years. We specialise in fancy colour diamonds and rare white diamonds. We are taking advantage of Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show to expand our presence in Asia. A wide range of diamonds are being showcased this year, primarily white diamonds and yellow diamonds with a value from US$5,000 to US$5 million. An exclusive collection of diamond jewellery is also displayed. We have met with many buyers. The strongest demand comes from buyers of the Chinese mainland and USA. The results have been positive and everything is good here.”
Elfat Belassen, New York Office Manager, D.B.S. Diamonds, Inc., USA (Booth No. AWE 2-S12)

“Hatta New World has been in the jewellery business since 1962. Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl has been an excellent trading platform over the years for the industry. We are showcasing our high quality rubies, sapphires and paraiba tourmalines. A lot of buyers from the Chinese mainland, the Middle East, Europe and Russia have come to us and they are keener to buy here. Some jewellery collectors, dealers and chain stores have requested us to cut stones according to their specifications. So far, eight buyers have bought gemstones from us. HKTDC has provided excellent support for us to strengthen exchanges with buyers. We are able to secure new buyers from different countries every year through the exhibition. We are really happy with the show.”
Chang Hatta, Chairman, Hatta New World Company Limited, Hong Kong (Booth No. AWE 1-B16)
