One of the greatest advantages and the strongest appeal of this Hong Kong show is the large diversity and universality of the exhibitors. Here, you can find gems, pearls and diamonds from an accessible to high value price. There is something for every taste and budget. Here are just a few of the many wonderful examples that caught my attention at the show.
Known for its wide selection of Brazilian gemstones of all kinds, Sabbagh Bros featured some amazingly large morganites and Brazilian fire opal, among its other colourful gems. What caught my attention was its large selection of dark rich Madeira citrines and unusual blue-green bi-colour tourmalines. Sabbagh Bros also offered a wide selection of rutilated quartz. Some had the typical gold rutiles, while other gems had beautiful copper-coloured rutiles.

In addition to its exquisite gems, including a 84-carat suite of 30 Zambian emeralds, Caram also showcased a fabulous ring, designed by Alessio Boschi, that featured a 20-carat unheated Burmese sapphire. Surrounded by 12 carats of VVS baguette and round diamonds, it also featured vivid yellow brilliants around the shank. The yellow represented the rays of the sun, while the white diamonds represented the rays of the moon in this “Celestial Circle.”

One of the more remarkable diamonds seen at the AWE was at the Diarough booth. Created by The Buddha Diamond Company, the Buddha design is copyrighted and trademarked around the world. It is a modified brilliant cut with 58 facets and sparkles even more than a brilliant of similar size. A perfect match between tradition, spirituality, and modernity, the Buddha Diamond is available in sizes from 40 points to 7.5 carats. On display are the individual stones as well as the diamonds set in jewellery. Truly spectacular.

I was delighted to find a unique masterpiece which is totally different from the offerings of other booths in the crowded Pearl Pavilion inside the AWE venue. Komatsu Cutting Factory (AWE booth no. AWE: 1-N41) has used diamond-cutting techniques to create the “Hanashinju (Flower Pearl)”, the only one of its kind in the world. The creation of “Hanashinju” required sophisticated Japanese technology which has earned Komatsu many awards, including the Good Design Award and the Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Award by METI. “Hanashinju” has been exhibited in many jewellery shows and had received accolades around the world. In Hong Kong, Komatsu collaborated with a local retailer to launch Mocha Jewellery which has become more and more popular over the years. President of Komatsu Cutting Factory, Komatsu, believes it is very important to establish strong relationships with retailers so that Komatsu products such as “Hanashinju” have a high local profile, leading to expansion in sales.
“In business for 40 years, Shoba is a wholesaler of gemstones in the USA. I have been visiting Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show over the years. This is definitely a good sourcing place for gemstones. I am here again this year looking for all kinds of colour stones such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds. So far, I have found at least five new suppliers from Hong Kong. There is such a diversity of gemstones on offer and their prices are quite reasonable. I will negotiate further with them and the potential orders will amount to about US$250,000. The economy in USA is improving and we expect to see stronger demand for gemstones and jewellery. The Hong Kong fair is excellent. I can find so many nice choices here.” Abedin T. J., President, Shoba, Inc., USA
“Visanti is a leading pearl jewellery manufacturer in Poland. We are also engaged in the wholesale business of pearls. Our products are selling in Poland and Europe. I love visiting Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show. This large-scaled exhibition offers an excellent sourcing platform for us to buy everything we want. I have identified five to 10 new suppliers from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland for South Sea freshwater pearls. The amount of potential orders is expected to be around US$50,000 to US$100,000. This is the biggest fair of its kind worldwide offering so much to choose. I will also visit Hong Kong International Jewellery Show to source some exquisite watches. It’s just wonderful to be able to visit two major fairs at the same time.” Miroslaw Parlak, General Manager, Visanti, Poland
Hear What Exhibitors Say
“Wilds Company Limited always finds Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show a significant event to promote our colour stones and gemstone jewellery. Besides showcasing our rich variety of high-end precious items, we put much emphasis on extending more choices for customers this year in particular. We are displaying rubies from Myanmar, Mozambique and Vietnam together to help buyers compare and appreciate their difference and appeal. Another highlight is a special showcase of padparadscha that stands out with a varied range of unique pinkish orange colour. Padparadscha that comes mainly from Sri Lanka and Madagascar is getting increasing interest and demand. We are trying to introduce more choices for buyers. The exhibition atmosphere is positive and buyers are forthcoming to purchase. This is the first major fair for the trade of diamonds, gems and pearls in the new year. The timing is perfect and that’s why we see so many buyers coming here.” Angela Yuen, Managing Director, Wilds Company Limited, Hong Kong (booth no: AWE 10-H25, AWE 1-A22)
“J Ocean Pearl focuses on the trading business of loose pearls and pearl jewellery. We offer a wide range of white pearls from South Sea and black pearls from Tahiti. There is also an exclusive collection of gold pearls for high-end customers especially those from the Chinese mainland and Southeast Asia. Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show is a must-attend trade fair every year to drive our business development. We have attracted strong interest again this year. A number of buyers from the Chinese mainland and Europe have come to us looking for good quality pearls. We have concluded some business already as some keen buyers immediately snapped up pearls they found appealing. HKTDC has done a good job extending our reach to more international customers. We are able to find new buyers here every year. We hope to increase our booth space to get even more exposure.” Jackie Leung, Director, and Lila Wong, General Manager, J Ocean Pearl Jewellery Limited, Hong Kong (booth no: AWE 1-P02)
