With the opening of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show 2017 today, the jewellery world comes together for the specialised offerings in jewellery raw materials and loose stones of over 1,900 exhibitors from 39 countries and regions. The show’s opening sets the scene for the world’s largest jewellery marketplace, as the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2017 opens on 2 March.
Together these two complementary events showcase around 4,480 exhibitors from 52 countries and regions. Exhibitors of diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones and pearls of many different origins are housed in the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show here in AsiaWorld-Expo while exquisite finished jewellery is presented in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. |

On 20 February, Lawrence Ma, Chairman, HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2017 and HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show 2017 Organising Committee, Kent Wong, Chairman, HKTDC Jewellery Advisory Committee 2016/2017, and Benjamin Chau, Deputy Executive Director, HKTDC, briefed the journalists on the highlights of the two fairs and industry updates . |

The presentation of awards to winners of the 18th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition, with a parade of the winning pieces. Media representatives were able to interview the winners and to take photos with their creations.

Seminar on "Breakthrough in Natural IIa Diamond Research and Current Status of Synthetic Gem-quality Diamonds" |
|
Highlights: Two senior figures in the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will illustrate why some outstanding diamonds, such as the Cullinan, have characteristics distinctive from other diamonds. The seminar also will also review synthetic technologies, the current status of synthetic gem diamonds, and the technologies developed for both screening and identification. |

Dr. Evan M. Smith, is a Postdoctoral Research Associate with GIA. His work focuses on systematically characterising the inclusions he sees in rare types of diamonds to fill in some of the missing pieces in our understanding of how diamonds form and what they mean for the evolution of the planet. Dr. Smith holds a Ph.D. in geology from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. |

Dr. Wuyi Wang is Director of Research and Development in GIA. He holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from the Beijing University and a doctorate in geology from the University of Tsukuba. He has spent more than 20 years studying diamond geochemistry and the treatment of diamond and other gem materials. He has published many articles in academic and trade journals. |
